Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route with dormitory-style huts the whole way (no camping). You sleep in Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts, which is a big comfort advantage in rain or cold plus you carry less bulky camp gear. It’s also the most direct classic route, with a simpler trail and fewer scrambling sections. Marangu uses the same route up and down, so it can feel busier.
Begin in the rainforest on a well-defined trail with a gentle, steady climb. You may spot colobus monkeys and enjoy a cooler, shaded walk under tall trees. Arrive at Mandara Hut, settle in, and rest early your first night on the mountain is all about hydration and pacing.
The forest thins into heath and moorland, with wider views and a drier feel. You’ll start noticing the altitude more as you approach Horombo. Take it pole pole, arrive with time to relax, and enjoy classic Kibo and Mawenzi views (weather allowing).
A short “climb high, sleep low” day that makes a big difference for summit success. Hike up toward Zebra Rocks for altitude exposure, then return to Horombo for a stronger sleep. Use the afternoon to rest, eat well, and prepare mentally for the higher camps.
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo an open alpine desert landscape with big skies and fewer landmarks. The walk feels longer because of the altitude and dry air. Arrive at Kibo Hut, have an early dinner, hydrate, and sleep early for the midnight summit start.
Summit night begins around midnight. Climb steadily to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak (the highest point in Africa). After sunrise photos, descend carefully back to Kibo for a short break, then continue down to Horombo. This is the hardest day slow pace and good layering are key.
Descend through moorland back into rainforest, finishing at Marangu Gate for your certificates. From here you transfer back to Moshi/Arusha for a shower, celebration meal, and rest.
